An attractive home exterior is not just for potential home buyers, it’s for you (and your neighbors, too!) Curb appeal is all about keeping your home looking its best, from first impressions… to lasting impact. We have a few quick, easy tips to help you show off the exterior of your home so you can be the envy of all your neighbors.

Whether you live on a big ranch on the outskirts of town or in a townhouse in the middle of downtown, these tips will help you make a statement.

Freshen the Front Door

The front door is often the first thing people see when looking at your home. Try to see it with new eyes – does it need a fresh coat of paint? Maybe it’s time to replace it completely? If you’re pleased with the current design and color, perhaps it could simply be cleaned up. Clean off any dirty spots and polish up the metal for a fresh, clean look. This could also be an opportunity to consider dressing it up with a seasonally relevant wreath!

Dress Up Your Mailbox

If you are a rural resident, you probably have a mailbox at the end of your driveway. If you drive down any road in the country, you will probably see row upon row of mailboxes —all with a similar size and shape.

Those mailboxes might be functional, but they are certainly not unique. If you want your own mailbox to stand out, a bit of landscaping is in order. You can start by adding a bracket for a hanging basket to the side of your mailbox, then filling it with an ever-changing variety of fresh flowers and colorful plants.

You can also landscape the area around your mailbox, surrounding it with colorful stones, interesting rocks and other accents. This type of landscaping will also help to protect your mailbox from erosion and other damage. When the spring rains come, the rocks-and-stones will help keep the soil in place and possibly prevent your mailbox from being washed away.

Landscaping your mailbox is a great way to enhance the curb appeal, and even the value, of your home. When you are done, your rural mail carrier will be proud to stop by your mailbox and see what you have done.

Light the Way

If there’s one common thread of any beautiful home exterior, it’s well-planned outdoor lighting. The right combination of outdoor lighting fixtures showcase landscaping and highlight the home’s architecture. Add walkway lights, up lights, moon lighting and porch lights. There are a lot of amazing choices! Well placed lights can add ambiance and character.

Create a Container Garden

Whether it’s in a windowsill planter or in movable planters, a container garden not only adds a nice pop of color and greenery, you can also use container gardens as a place to grow herbs, and easy-to-grow vegetables.

No green thumb? Not a problem! Most garden centers and home centers offer ready-made container gardens.

Spruce Up the Lawn

While the front door, mailbox and container gardens are nice accessories, a plush, green and inviting lawn is the pièce de ré·sis·tance for desirable curb appeal. Lucky for you, there’s no need to go it alone when it comes to turning a drab piece of land into a healthy, gorgeous lawn.

Cedar Mountain Tree and Lawn Care offers a range of landscaping services from customized lawn treatments to seasonal fertilization and insect control with environmentally-friendly product applications. Check Up Those Trees

When updating the aesthetics of your home, don’t forget about the trees! Trimming and pruning a tree is one of those things that is easy to overlook. Unless a problem comes up, such as a large branch that is causing a risk of danger or damage, the average person will not see when tree branches need attention or tree trimming service. But, they surely will see the difference when they see what their beautifully trimmed tree looks like.

Landscape the Flagpole

If you’re lucky enough to have the space, one final touch to creating curb appeal is with a landscaped flagpole. Flying the flag is the perfect way to show your patriotism and love of country.

To create a nicely landscaped space from which to fly the flag, start by laying out a ring of sturdy stones or paving bricks in a circle around the flagpole. You will need to determine how wide the ring should be, but once you do you can use a string and a couple of boards to mark the boundary.

Once those initial rocks or paving bricks are in place, you can work on filling it all in and making the space look its best. Light-colored rocks interspersed with colorful flowers provides a dramatic look for your flagpole. You can use flowers from your garden, or plant a flower bed right under the flag. No matter what approach you choose, you will be proud to put up your flag each morning.

These are just a few ideas to help get you going with creating enviable curb appeal. Don’t forget the exterior of your home deserves as much love and attention as the interior.
